Dodgers are first to make playoffs

SAN DIEGO — The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team to clinch a playoff spot in the pandemic-shortened season, beating the San Diego Padres 7-5 on Wednesday behind Dustin May’s gutty effort out of the bullpen and home runs from AJ Pollock and Chris Taylor.

BREWERS, CARDINALS SPLIT: Brent Suter and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, and host Milwaukee beat St. Louis 6-0 to split a twin bill. St. Louis took the opener 4-2 on Adam Wainwright’s four-hitter.

YANKEES 13, BLUE JAYS 2: Kyle Higashioka hit a career-high three home runs, DJ Lemahieu connected twice, and New York routed Toronto at Yankee Stadium.

ORIOLES 5, BRAVES 1: Cole Hamels finally got on the mound in an Atlanta uniform, pitching into the fourth, but the Braves struggled en route to losing at Baltimore.

GIANTS 9, MARINERS 3: Brandon Belt hit a two-run homer, and San Francisco beat Seattle in a game that was moved from Seattle to San Francisco because of poor air quality as a result of wildfires.

TWINS 5, WHITE SOX 1: Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano each hit a two-run homer, and Minnesota won at Chicago to deny the White Sox a chance to clinch their first playoff berth in 12 years.

NATIONALS 4, RAYS 2 (10): Rookie Luis Garcia hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning, and visiting Washington beat the AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

ATHLETICS 3, ROCKIES 1: Mike Fiers threw six sharp innings before turning it over to a lights-out bullpen, and Oakland snapped a six-game skid against host Colorado.

REDS 1, PIRATES 0: Luis Castillo pitched a masterful seven innings, and Cincinnati edged visiting Pittsburgh to extend its winning streak to a season-high five games.

ROYALS 4, TIGERS 0: Brady Singer was stellar for a second straight start, allowing two hits in six innings while striking out eight, and Kansas City won at Detroit.

METS 5, PHILLIES 4: Jacob degrom exited early because of a right hamstring spasm, but New York overcame a four-run deficit to rally for a win at Philadelph­ia.

MARLINS 8, RED SOX 4: Jorge Alfaro homered twice, and host Miami beat Boston.

CUBS 3, INDIANS 2 (10): Javier Baez’s RBI single in the 10th inning lifted Chicago over visiting Cleveland.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 9, ANGELS 6: Kole Calhoun and David Peralta homered, and Arizona won at Los Angeles.
