An ankle monitor led San Antonio police to one of three teenage suspects arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during an apparent drug deal and robbery.

Miguel Carvajal, 20, died during the incident Tuesday evening in the parking lot of a CVS drug store on the West Side, officials said.

Trevon Chaney, 18; Aviar Smith, 18; and Roger Koontz, 19, were charged Thursday with capital murder in the death of Carvajal.

On Tuesday, officers were called to thecvs at 9838 Potranco Road after shotswere heard in the parking lot just before 7 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Carvajal unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a dark gray Chevrolet sedan.

According to an arrest affidavit, Chaney and a second male got into the back seat of the sedan to allegedly purchase drugs but instead pulled out handguns and demanded the drugs and property from Carvajal and a second occupant of the car.

Carvajal reached for his own gun and managed to fire one shot before he was wounded, the affidavit said. The second occupant of the vehicle managed to get out of the car and flee as the suspects started shooting at him.

Later that night, one suspect was dropped off at a local hospital, where he was arrested by police.

Police also were able to find a third suspect, who they accused of driving the getaway vehicle. The driver said the wounded suspect and a man named “Tre” — later identified as Chaney — got into the victim’s vehicle shortly before shotswere fired, according to the affidavit.

At the time of the shooting, Chaney was wearing an ankle monitor and police were able to track his location at the crime scene as well as at the hospital, where the injured suspect was dropped off.

The affidavit did not say which suspect authorities believe fired the shot that killed Carvajal.

Chaney’s bail was set at $500,000, Smith’s at $350,000 and Koontz’s at $250,000.
