Brackenridge 26, Sam Houston 20 (OT)
Quick take: Four quarters were not enough to decide a winner between Brackenridge and Sam Houston on Friday night. A missed field goal by Sam Houston in the first overtime set up Brackenridge with a chance to win the game after it had given up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. As he had done most of the night, Eagles quarterback Carlos Camargo led the way with a 4-yard run to win the game 26-20.
Highlights: Brackenridge opened the game with a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive that took 3:31 off the clock. The Eagles’ opening touchdown came on a 5-yard run by Camargo with 8:29 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles made it 14-0 early in the second quarter when Aaron Villegas ran in from 3 yards out with 10:43 left in the quarter.
The Hurricanes finally got on the board on their second drive of the third quarter. Daunte Brooks capped off a five-play, 97-yard drive with a 33-yard touchdown run at the 5:56 mark. Sam Houston went for two but was unsuccessful in the attempt. Camargo put Brackenridge up by 14 in the fourth quarter when he found an open Keith Fennell for a 19-yard touchdown. Camargo had been a perfect 2 for 2 on extra points, but the third time wasn’t the charm as he missed the extra point, keeping the score at 20-6.
Brooks led the Hurricanes on a fourth-quarter comeback. His first touchdown of the quarter went to Faiszon Reese for 5 yards. Brooks ran for the twopoint try and cut the deficit to 20-14 with 7:48 to play. Three minutes later, the Hurricanes tied the score at 20 when Brooks found Dejon Hights open for a 13-yard touchdown.
Both teams spent the rest of the quarter trading punts. In overtime, Brackenridge won the toss and elected to go on defense first. After Sam Houston missed a 20-yard field goal, the game was in Camargo’s hands. He did the rest.
