S.A. payroll company expanding

Execupay buys a Kansas firm

The pandemic hasn’t gotten in the way of a San Antonio payroll company’s growth plans.

Execupay, an 80-person firm headquartered at 10500 Heritage Blvd., said it has bought Olathe, Kan.-based Paydayz Payroll in its second such acquisition this year. In February, the company purchased Fox Payroll of Foxboro, Mass.

Execupay did not disclose how much it paid for either company.

The Paydayz deal didn’t include employees, but it did add the firm’s 110 payroll customers across six states to Execupay’s pool of 75,000 clients nationwide.

The Paydayz Payroll employees shifted to the firm’s staffing division, according to Scott Abramson, Execupay’s vice president of sales and marketing.

“We do acquire smaller bureaus like Paydayz and Fox Payroll, and things like that,” he said. “If the opportunity looks like a good one, we will buy their clients from them and fold them into the Execupay center here in San Antonio.”

In addition to providing payroll support, Execupay licenses proprietary payroll software to 150 companies around the country, according to Abramson. And it provides “white label” services to firms such as Sam’s Club, BBVA Compass and Bamboohr that want to offer payroll services under their own brands.

“If you’re a Sam’s Club member, for instance, you can buy payroll services right off the Sam’s Club website,” he said. “And it’s really Execupay pay in the background doing it under the Sam’s Club brand.”

The company’s business has remained strong throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“Business is doing well,” Abramson said. “We lost a little bit in the hospitality area, but everybody did in that sector, and it’s definitely starting to come back.”

Execupay began in 1974, making it the oldest independent payroll

service provider in the country, according to Abramson.

“Following a year of unprecedented change, we look forward to continue helping Paydayz Payroll clients navigate the Paycheck Protection Program and all the available payroll-based tax credits designed to help small businesses recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Gerald Stowers, Execupay’s chief executive.
