Texas A&M University-san Antonio officials announced the selection of Mohamed Abdelrahman as their new provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective July 18.

Abdelrahman has served in that capacity at Colorado State University Pueblo since June 2018, and now will return to the Texas A&M University System, where he worked between 2010 and 2016.

“As a faculty member and administrator, Dr. Abdelrahman has a proven track record of innovative and outcome-driven academic leadership,” A&MSAN Antonio President Cynthia Teniente-matson said in the university’s written announcement.

“I am certain he will foster and support our continued academic excellence at A&M-SAN Antonio and partner with faculty and staff to help ensure our strategic vision and guide our growth for the future.”

During his tenure at CSU Pueblo, Abdelrahman received more than $22 million in funding from federal, state, and private sources aimed at enhancing academic quality, closing equity gaps and ensuring the success of underrepresented minorities and low-income students, the release stated.

It quoted him saying he was thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to help shape the San Antonio

school’s future.

“Higher education stands at a pivotal point. Texas A&M University-san Antonio, a young and aspiring institution in a remarkable city with history, diversity, culture, and plenty of opportunities, is poised for a significant and impactful future as an institution,” Abdelrahman said.

Before moving to Colorado, Abdelrahman served as vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas Tech University from 2016 to 2018, at Texas A&M UniversityKingsville as associate vice president for research, dean of graduate studies and associate dean of engineering from 2010 to 2016, and taught at Tennessee Technological University from 1997 to 2010.

As provost, Abdelrahman will work with faculty to create new academic programs and courses, strengthen current offerings, and coordinate the university’s efforts to meet accreditation standards.

University officials announced the launch of a national search to replace former Provost Mike O’brien in September. At the time, O’brien was slated to become the university’s first senior vice president for research and health science, but in December he resigned following his disclosure of a $4 million deficit that he blamed on a “comedy of errors.”

At the time the search was launched, Teniente-matson cited the need to strengthen the university’s “sustained focus on research and academic expansion.”
