Grizzlies’ Brooks draws suspension

Memphis Grizzlies star Dillon Brooks has been suspended for one game without pay by the NBA for making “unnecessar­y and excessive contact” that resulted in a fractured elbow for Golden State’s Gary Payton II in Game 2 of the the Western Conference semifinals.

The league announced the penalty Thursday, so Brooks must sit out Saturday’s Game 3.

The NBA also announced that Warriors forward Draymond Green was fined $25,000 for directing an obscene gesture at the Grizzlies fans.

Middleton out two more games: Milwaukee forward Khris Middleton will miss at least two more games in the Eastern Conference semifinal series with Boston due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Hornets to interview D’antoni: The Charlotte Hornets have begun their search for a head coach, asking permission to speak with several candidates, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press.

The person said the list includes two-time NBA coach of the year Mike D’antoni, now a Pelicans consultant, Other candidates include five NBA assistant coaches: Golden State’s Kenny Atkinson, Dallas’ Sean Sweeney, Brooklyn’s David Vanterpool and Milwaukee’s Darvin Ham and Charles Lee.

Simmons has back surgery: Ben Simmons underwent a successful back surgery in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Cooper-dyke, 58, announced her retirement March 17. She had been scheduled for a Title IX hearing April 6. The school canceled the hearing after her departure.

“Throughout my years as a coach, I’ve had countless interactio­ns with players in my role as their coach, mentor and friend. I had positive relationsh­ips with the majority of players and staff, and my only intention was to maximize players’ potential and help them be their best,” Cooper-dyke said in a text message to The Athletic. “While these allegation­s are untrue, everyone deserves to work, play and learn in a respectful environmen­t, and I deeply apologize for and regret any words used during the course of a spirited game or practice that offended or hurt someone.”

TSU declined comment.

The Athletic reported that Cooper-dyke was being investigat­ed for weight-shaming players and using sexually charged comments to criticize players.
