Boerne tennis gets silver at state meet
Boerne fell short of claiming its first-ever state championship in team tennis with a 10-8 loss against Canyon Randall in the Class 4A state championship held Thursday at Texas A&M in College Station.
The Greyhounds trailed 4-3 after doubles and won five of six matches in boys singles. Randall secured the title by winning all five matches in girls singles that were completed.
Brothers Shae Gonzales, a freshman, and Jess Gonzales, a senior, earned wins in boys doubles and boys singles. The brothers teamed for a victory in doubles.
Freshman Justin Barraza was also a double winner in boys doubles (with freshman Ben Rowe) and boys singles. Senior Ian Siemens teamed with senior Chloe O’connor for a win in mixed doubles and prevailed in boys singles.
The other boys singles winner for Boerne was freshman Aidan Cebe.
It was the Greyhounds’ second runner-up finish in their third appearance at the state tournament. Boerne lost against Hereford 10-8 in the 2020 4A final. The Greyhounds lost against eventual statechampion Abilene Wylie in the 2016 4A semifinals.
Randall’s dominance in girls singles was the difference.
The Greyhounds finished the season at 20-3. Randall completed an undefeated run (35-0) in its first state-tournament appearance.
