Weekend of chilly weather and rain expected
A cold front pushing through San Antonio this weekend is expected to keep temperatures below average until Thursday.
Drier and warmer temperatures are forecast for Thanksgiving Day, with an expected high near 70 degrees.
“Air flows are pushing air from north Canada straight down, continuously sending us reinforcing high-pressure surges or weak to moderate cold fronts,” said Monte Oaks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New Braunfels. “One after another, we’re getting a resupply of cold air. We expect it to pull away from that into the end of next week.”
While La Niña conditions, which favor warmer temperatures and drier weather, are forecast to continue through the fall and winter, Texas and most of the central United States are experiencing an uncharacteristic weather pattern, Oaks said.
The cold front coming to San Antonio this weekend will bring with it a good chance of rain and high temperatures that will struggle to get out of the 40s.
The weather service said the best chance for rain is today, when the cold front moves in, bringing a low of about 42 degrees.
The high is forecast to be 47 today and 50 on Sunday. Similar temperatures are expected to continue through the second half of next week. A 50 percent chance of rain is forecast Sunday night into Monday morning.
“We’ve got a pretty good shot of high rain chances,” Oaks said. “We’re mostly looking at one-tenth to a quarter of an inch. So not a whole lot to fill up the aquifer, but quite helpful for grasses and yards.”
With few exceptions, the Hill Country is not likely to see freezing temperatures over the weekend, Oaks said.
