Gerson’s wisdom is missed
I was saddened to read that Michael Gerson, a nationally syndicated columnist for the Washington Post who ran in the Express-news, died. During the past six or seven years, he had become one of my favorite writers. A staunch conservative and evangelical Christian, he had been involved in both Bush administrations.
But Gerson in recent years grew discouraged about the trajectory of the Republican Party and the kowtowing of elected Republicans to Donald Trump. For him, Christian values, character and the Constitution mattered more than victory or “owning the libs.” He once referred to Mitch Mcconnell as the leader of the “lickspittle” wing of the party for being a Republican ahead of being an American.
His columns about the issues we face always counseled common sense and the commonwealth, and I have no doubt many of his readers will miss him and his wisdom.
