Remove driving privileges

- Kevin T. Bryan

Re: “Getting off easy,” Front page, Sunday:

The article Sunday told of a threetime convicted DWI offender who received minimal sentencing due to plea deals, again received a DWI and almost killed another driver.

We are constantly hearing about the impaired driving the wrong way, swerving into other lanes and running into objects or people. The majority seem to get out of the charges through either plea deals or deferments.

An acquaintance of mine has at least five DWIS. After the last one, his lawyers kept postponing his hearing until the two-year statute of limitations ran out. He walked, punished only by his lawyer fees.

Let’s take DWIS seriously.

At the very least, driving privileges should immediately be revoked for a minimum 30 days or, if warranted, longer or permanently. Driving is not a right but a privilege earned through testing and licensing, and should be maintained by responsible performance.

This should apply equally to the common person, professor, pastor, politician or performer, regardless of their title or position in society.
