Keep attention on DWIS

-

DWI an accident? Not!

I’m thankful to see our press shine a spotlight on DWI and its preventable devastation. I sincerely hope that attention remains as long as DWI exists.

The choice to drink alcohol is personal, but to then drive public streets in a multi-ton, out-of-control “bullet” puts innocent victims into the mix. To drink and drive amounts to “My personal desire far outweighs any concern for your public safety — no accident.”

Columnist Cary Clack (“DWIS never end, nor does the pain,” Opinion, Sunday) put it right. Mass casualty incidents get the public’s attention, but in Bexar County the constant slowrising death toll and destruction of DWI is as noticeable as a dripping beer tap — until it comes to your home.

For city/county leadership, please let this ferment when funding policing programs. Nowhere more effectively than DWI enforcement can peace officers say at the end of their shift, “We prevented someone from dying or killing your loved one.”
