Marquette defense too much for sloppy Baylor

MILWAUKEE — Olivier-maxence Prosper scored 24 points and Marquette capitalize­d on a dominant start from its defense to roll past No. 6 Baylor 96-70 on Tuesday night in the Big 12-Big East Battle.

Marquette (6-2) raced to a 51-25 halftime lead thanks to a 24-0 edge in points off turnovers. Baylor (5-2) already had a season-high 16 turnovers by halftime and finished with 20.

The margin never dropped below 22 points in the second half.

This was the highestran­ked team Marquette has beaten under secondyear coach Shaka Smart. Marquette owns a 7-6 record against AP Top 25 teams under Smart.

Kam Jones had 20 points and David Joplin added 19 as Marquette shot 58.3 percent overall to win its third straight.

LJ Cryer scored 19 points, Adam Flagler scored 16 and Keyonte George had 12 for Baylor.

Marcus Sasser had a season-high 25 points and the Cougars made 17 3-pointers to beat the visiting Spartans in Houston's first game since becoming the nation's

No. 1 team.

Sasser, a preseason All-america senior guard, made seven 3pointers before exiting the game with Houston up 41 points with 7 minutes, 17 seconds left.

Tramon Mark added 16 points and six assists and Jamal Shead added 12 points and 11 assists for UH, which took over the top spot in the Associated Press and USA Today coaches' polls on Monday for the first time since late in the 1982-83 season.

NO. 3 VIRGINIA 70 MICHIGAN 68

Jayden Gardner made a go-ahead jumper with 39.9 seconds left and blocked Jett Howard's 3-point shot just before the buzzer, allowing the Cavaliers to hold on and beat the host Wolverines in the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge.

Virginia (6-0) trailed by 11 points at halftime, rallied to go ahead with 7:25 left and built a fivepoint lead that didn't last.

NO. 16 ILLINOIS 73 SYRACUSE 44

Coleman Hawkins had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, and the Illini thumped the visiting Orange in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge.

Neither team shot well in this game, but Illinois (6-1) hit 6 of its 15 3-point attempts in the second half to send Syracuse (3-4) home with its third straight loss.

NO. 19 KENTUCKY 60 BELLARMINE 41

Antonio Reeves scored 18 points to lead the host Wildcats to a win over the Knights.

Jacob Toppin had 12 points and CJ Fredrick finished with 11 as Kentucky (5-2) overcame a slow start.

NO. 22 MARYLAND 79 LOUISVILLE 54

Donta Scott scored 18 points and the visiting Terrapins made five consecutiv­e 3-pointers to open the second half in a runaway victory over the winless Cardinals at the ACC/BIG Ten Challenge.

The Terrapins (7-0) led throughout, including 37-26 at halftime.

NO. 24 SAN DIEGO STATE 72 UC IRVINE 69

Micah Parrish hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2.4 seconds left to give the host Aztecs a come-from-behind win over the Anteaters.

Nathan Mensah scored 18 points to lead San Diego State (5-2), which came into the game looking to rebound after consecutiv­e defeats to Arizona and Arkansas.

Women NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 73 UCLA 64

Aliyah Boston, looking healthy as ever, had 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as the Gamecocks rallied from 10points down to beat the visiting Bruins.

Boston had missed the second half in a win over Hampton on Sunday after a hard fall.

NO. 8 IOWA STATE 93 SIU EDWARDSVIL­LE 43

Lexi Donarski scored 22 points as the host Cyclones routed the Cougars.

Iowa State (6-1) was playing just 48 hours after suffering its first loss and returning home around 5:45 a.m. Monday.

NO. 11 LSU 63 SE LOUISIANA 55

Angel Reese scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Tigers held off the Lady Lions to remain unbeaten.

LSU (8-0) looked to have the game in hand after an 11-0 run built a 21-point lead early in the third quarter. But the SE Louisiana (4-3) rallied behind a career-high 28 points from Alexius Horne.
