Indictments charge 3 in 2 fatal shootings

- By Taylor Pettaway STAFF WRITER

Three people were indicted last week on murder charges in connection with two fatal shootings in September.

Deveon Taylor-white and Michael Randle, who are accused of fatally shooting Daniel Murphy on Sept. 2 while robbing his Northeast Side apartment, were among the 337 felony indictments issued by Bexar County grand juries.

Police were called to Murphy’s apartment after 911 callers reported seeing a group of men break into the apartment and hold Murphy at gunpoint. Witnesses said

Taylor-white pointed a gun at Murphy’s back as they forced him into the apartment, an arrest affidavit said.

A second witness inside the apartment during the shooting told investigators that Taylorwhite gave Randle a “verbal direct order” to shoot and kill Murphy, the documents said.

The Criminal Trial Division is prosecuting the cases separately in the 437th District Court. If convicted, Taylor-white and Randle would face up to life in prison.

In another indictment, Isaiah Acosta is charged with murder in the Sept. 12 fatal shooting of Alvin Mcshaw.

The shooting occurred at Acosta’s apartment in the Medical Center area. When police arrived at the complex, in the 7000 block of Oak Manor Drive, they found Mcshaw lying in the hallway outside Acosta’s apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he died the next day.

Acosta was arrested moments later in his apartment on an aggravated assault charge, which was upgraded after Mcshaw died.

Mcshaw was the boyfriend of one of Acosta’s relatives.

The Criminal Trial Division is prosecuting the case in the 399th District Court. If convicted, Acosta faces up to life in prison.

Also indicted last week was Lacharles County, who was charged with failure to stop and render aid, resulting in death.

The indictment alleges that on Sept. 3, County was involved in an accident that killed Demetra Sibley and did not help Sibley when it was apparent that he needed medical treatment.

The case is being prosecuted by the Criminal Trial Division in the 144th District Court. If convicted, County faces up to 20 years in prison.

Also indicted on a charge of failure to stop and render aid resulting in death is Marc Mendez.

Police said Mendez struck Mario Bulger, who was walking in the 8200 block of Culebra Road on March 5.

Bulger was taken to a hospital, where he died shortly after.

Shortly after the crash, a witness told officers that he was with Mendez at the time of the crash, saying the pair had just left a bar and were headed to another bar. He told police that Mendez struck an object in the road but didn’t turn around to check.

The case is being prosecuted by the Criminal Trial Division in the 399th District Court. If convicted, Mendez would face up to 20 years in prison.
