Carriages are risky relics
I applaud San Antonio officials for submitting a plan to ban horse-drawn carriages from their urban streets. In addition to the inhumane treatment of horses and traffic congestion, there’s another important reason to see this through.
As founder of the Partnership to
Ban Horse Carriages Worldwide, I am all too familiar with the accidents and fatalities that occur regularly in cities where horses are forced to share the roads with motor vehicles.
Less than one year ago, a 74-yearold man had to be airlifted to an emergency room in Massachusetts with a traumatic spinal cord injury after falling off a horse-drawn carriage, and a 5-year-old boy fell out of a horse-drawn carriage in Niagara Falls and was run over by the carriage’s wheel.
Your City Council has the power to stop these risky relics before someone is seriously injured or worse.
