HOUSE PANEL SETS CRIMINAL REFERRALS

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol will issue criminal referrals to the Justice Department based on its inquiry, the panel’s chairman said Tuesday, but has made no decision on who it will recommend charging or what offenses it will cite.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-miss., said the committee was meeting later Tuesday to discuss the details. While Congress can send criminal referrals to the Justice Department, it is ultimately up to federal prosecutors whether to pursue charges.
