The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted Wednesday to appoint Linda Schott as interim president of Texas A&M University-san Antonio ahead of the departure of President Cynthia Teniente Matson in January.

Teniente-matson last month announced she was leaving to become the next president of San José State University in California after leading A7MSAN Antonio since 2015.

A&M System Chancellor John Sharp called Schott “an experienced and successful academic leader who will provide steady guidance.”

Schott served as president of Southern Oregon University from 2016 to 2021, and led a campus in the University of Maine System from 2012 to 2016. She is coming out of retirement to fill this interim role.

She and her husband, Tom Fuhrmark, returned to Texas this year, to a ranch near Medina Lake, where Schott grew up.

She graduated from Bandera High School and has a bachelor’s degree in history and German from Baylor University, and a master’s and doctorate in history and humanities from Stanford University.

“Texas A&M-SAN Antonio has a strong reputation for helping students transform their lives,” Schott said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the faculty and staff there to continue that great work.”
