Scherzer tossed as Mets top Dodgers

-

LOS ANGELES — Brandon Nimmo tallied five hits with a home run and a pair of RBIS and Max Scherzer was ejected after umpires did a check of his glove before the fourth inning as the New York Mets picked up a series win with a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Scherzer was furious when tossed by umpire Phil Cuzzi following the inspection of his glove and a lengthy conversation that included plate umpire Dan Bellino, the crew chief. The 38-year-old righthander already had been told by umpires to change his glove before he took the mound one inning earlier in the bottom of the third.

Scherzer yelled “It’s rosin!” at Bellino and Cuzzi before his ejection.

Rays 8, Reds 0: Yandy Díaz homered on the third pitch of Levi Stoudt’s MLB debut to spark a six-run first inning as visiting Tampa Bay routed Cincinnati to improve to a major league-best 16-3.

Tampa Bay pitched its second straight shutout and has six this season, more than half the Rays’ total of 10 for all of last year. Tampa Bay tops the big leagues with 133 runs and has allowed 50, tied for the league’s lowest mark entering the day.

Phillies 5, White Sox 2: Trea Turner homered and had three hits and Brandon Marsh also went deep as Philadelphia beat host Chicago.

Taijuan Walker pitched into the seventh inning, and the Phillies had better luck against Mike Clevinger after being held to one hit by Lucas Giolito and three relievers in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

Giants 5, Marlins 2 (11): Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski hit two-run homers off Devin Smeltzer in the 11th inning, lifting visiting San Francisco over Miami to stop a five-game losing streak.

San Francisco didn’t have a hit after the fourth inning until Conforto, who pinch hit in the eighth, broke a 1-1 tie when he drove a hanging curveball from Smeltzer (0-1) over the wall in right-center for his fourth homer.

Cardinals 14, Diamondbacks 5: Tommy Edman had a three-run homer with a career-best five RBIS and Nolan Gorman hit his first grand slam in the majors as host St. Louis beat Arizona.

Guardians 3, Tigers 2: José Ramírez bounced back from one of the worst games of his career with a three-run homer as visiting Cleveland beat Detroit.

Pirates 14, Rockies 3: Rodolfo Castro mashed a two-run home run and totaled 4 RBIS as Pittsburgh continued its strong start to the season with a lopsided win over host Colorado to sweep the series.
