Nissan Leaf SV Plus for 2024 can go up to 212 miles on full battery charge

- By G. CHAMBERS WILLIAMS III

Nissan’s all-electric Leaf compact hatchback got the benefit of a range upgrade two years ago, and just last year prices were reduced to attract more buyers into the EV world.

The lineup also was reduced last year from five models to just two, and that simplified lineup carries on for model year 2024. Nissan said the trimmed-down selection “reflects the most customer-requested features and technologies.”

Prices now start at $28,140 (plus $1,095 freight) for the base Leaf S model, and top out at $36,190 for the Leaf SV Plus. Qualified purchasers may also be eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500.

The 2024 Plus model, which we tested for this report, has the best range. It can go up to 212 miles on a full battery charge, Nissan says. That’s down from the 2022 model’s estimated 215-mile range, but still better than the 149-mile range before the upgraded battery and motor were made available in the SV Plus.

Updates to the Leaf last year included an enhanced front end appearance, with a refreshed front grille, bumper molding, and headlights that feature a new black inner trim.

The Nissan badge is now illuminated and represents the brand’s new design identity. Also, the tire deflectors at all four corners, rear under-diffuser, and rear spoiler all were redesigned for better aerodynamics.

SV Plus also comes with five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

Inside, changes included the new Nissan badge on the steering wheel and a new start-up video on the

instrument panel screen.

Black cloth is standard on both models, with gray trim for the Leaf S and gloss-black trim for the SV Plus.

The base 2023 Leaf S is equipped with a 40-kwh lithium-ion battery and 110-kw electric motor that delivers 147 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque. It has an estimated range of 149 miles between charges.

With the SV Plus, there is a 60-kwh lithium-ion battery and a 160-kw electric motor that produces 214 horsepower and 250 foot-pounds of torque.

Standard on Leaf SV Plus is Propilot Assist, a hands-on driver assist system that combines Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control and steering assist technologies.

Propilot Assist also includes a stopand-hold function that can bring the vehicle to a full stop, hold it in place and then bring it back up to speed when traffic starts moving again.

Every 2024 Leaf comes with a limited lithium-ion battery warranty covering defects in materials or workmanship for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the battery pack.

Nissan also provides a limited warranty against battery loss below nine bars of capacity as shown on the vehicle’s battery level gauge for the first eight years or 100,000 miles for all models.

On our 2024 tester, according to the EPA fuel-economy windowsticker statement, the full charge takes about 11 hours with a 240volt

charger.

Nissan’s 2022 specs said all Leaf models could be charged to at least 80 percent of full capacity in 40-45 minutes using a quick charger.

Now, Nissan says the S model with the smaller battery can be charged to 80 percent of full power in 40 minutes, using the “Quick Charge” port, while the SV Plus can get to 80 percent charge in an hour.

After a 2018 redesign that increased its range to 149 miles from the original 107, the Leaf was introduced in the new extended-range version known as the Plus for 2020.

For the 2022 model year, there were five Leaf trim levels offered – two standard models with the shorter range, and three Plus versions with the extended range.
