Bro. Albert G. Kuntemeier, S.M. died in the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary on October 13, 2023, at the age of 92 and with 75 years of vowed life. He was born in St. Louis, MO on October 21, 1930, one of 4 children of Arthur F. and Regina (Peterman) Kuntemeier. His 3 other siblings; Catherine, Arthur, and Rosemary, are all deceased. After completing grade school at St. Paul, the Apostle School, he attended Northside Catholic High School, also in St. Louis, MO, for one year. He then completed his high school education at Maryhurst, the Marianist Postulate in St. Louis. The following year, he entered the Marianist Novitiate in Galesville, WI, and on August 15, 1948, he professed his First Vows. After earning his BS in Education in 1951 from the University of Dayton in Ohio, he made his Perpetual Profession in the Society of Mary on July 19, 1953 in Galesville, WI. Bro. Al, an avid learner, earned another 2 graduate degrees: an

MBA from Marquette University in 1962 and an MA in Counseling, from the University of Notre Dame in 1972.

From 1951 to 2014, Bro. Kuntemeier served as a Teacher, Recruiter, Counselor, Athletic Director, Athletic Chaplain, and Coach of multiple sports, specializing in Tennis. He’d say, “Life is a game, Tennis is Serious.” During those years he ministered at Coyle H.S. (1951–1960); Vianney H.S. (1960-61); and Mcbride H.S. (1961-62), all in the St. Louis area. He was invited then to serve as the Province’s Recruiter/vocation Minister from 1963-1970. In 1971 Bro. Al returned as Teacher, Counselor and Coach at Marian H.S. (S. Bend, IN), St. Michael’s H.S. (Chicago, IL), Bishop Mcguinness H.S. (Oklahoma City, OK), and Nolan Catholic H.S. (Fort Worth, TX).

Always an energetic and joyful extravert, in 2014 Bro. Al moved to San Antonio, TX to pursue Active Retirement

and Service to the Marianist Residence Community at St. Mary University. Aside from his great support of so many sports and other activities on the campus, especially as chaplain of the Tennis Team, he enjoyed traveling. During those travels he was deeply transformed by his pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Bosnia, where he grew in his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying the entire Rosary daily. He will always be remembered as a Man of Prayer. His favorite quote from St. Julian of Norwich: “The greatest honor we can give God is to live joyfully in the knowledge of his love for us.”
