Weekend events

- By Jim Kiest and Deborah Martin STAFF WRITERS

Hope you've recovered from all of that Halloween candy, because beer and sausage are on the menu now — it's the first weekend of Wurstfest in New Braunfels. There are all kinds of things to do closer to home, too. Here's a look.

Wurstfest: The annual celebration of all things German, from beer and sausage to polka, kicks off this weekend. Big Tent performers include the Alex Meixner Band on Friday and Die Bayrischen Hiatamadln, a show band from Munich. Opens today. Daily through Nov. 12, Wurstfest grounds, Landa Park, 120 Landa St., New Braunfels. $20-$25 weekends, free weekdays, wurstfest.com.

Christopher Cross: San Antonio native Christopher Cross had quite a year in 1980, scoring big hits with “Sailing” and “Ride Like the Wind” off his debut album and collecting five Grammy Awards, including best new artist. He followed up a couple of years later with an Oscar for the theme from “Arthur.” Earlier this year, he received the Texas Medal of Arts. 7 p.m. today, The Espee, 1174 E. Commerce St. $35-$160, theespee.com.

San Antonio Philharmonic: Guest conductor Stephen Mulligan leads a program including the overture to Mozart's “The Magic Flute,” Stravinsky's suite from the ballet “Pulcinella” and Dvorák's “New World” Symphony No. 9. 7:30 p.m. today-saturday, First Baptist Church of San Antonio, 515 Mccullough. $35-$75, saphil.org; $10 student tickets available at the door with ID.

Carlos Mencia: Through highs and lows, San Antonio comedy fans have always been there for boisterous stand-up comic Mencia, going back two decades to the Latino Laugh Festival. He once titled a special “Not for the Easily Offended,” which is probably still fair warning. 7:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. today, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 618 NW Loop 410. $60-$160 for tables seating two or four, improvtx.com.

Eddie Izzard: Stand-up comedian, actor and politician Izzard revisits material from 35 years of performing in “The Remix Tour.” 8 p.m. today, Majestic Theatre, 224 E. Houston St. $50-$150, majestic empire.com.

Polyphia: Wondering where all the guitar heroes have gone? Then check out this progressive rock band from Plano, which is fronted by two of them, Tim Henson and Scott Lepage. Polyphia's latest album is 2022's “Remember That You Will Die.” 8 p.m. Friday, Boeing Center at Tech Port, 3331 General Hudnell Drive. $25.50-$75.50, boeingcenter techport.com.

“The Prom”: This campy musical follows a quartet of washed-up Broadway stars who take it upon themselves to help when they hear that an Indiana high school canceled its prom rather than allowing a gay student to attend with her girlfriend. Opens today. 8 p.m. Fridays-saturdays through Nov. 11 with additional performances at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Stieren Theatre, Ruth Taylor Theatre Building, Trinity University, 1 Trinity Place. Free; reservations can be made at tuprom.bpt.me.

Noname: Chicago rapper Noname is touring in support of her new album, “Sundial,” the long-awaited follow-up to her critically acclaimed album “Room 25.” “Sundial” is, according to New Yorker writer Kelefa Sanneh, “as engrossing as anything anyone is likely to release this year.” 8:30 p.m. today, Paper Tiger, 2410 N. St. Mary’s St. $30, papertigersatx.com.

“Love and Rage in Times of Conflict”: Jayne Lawrence's

installation explores diametric emotions and their impact on communication. The exhibit marks the opening of cactusbarn, an offshoot of the Cactus Bra space, which had a 19-year run in King William. Opening reception 5-8 p.m. Friday. Through Jan. 5, cactusbarn, 613 Mission St. Info, cactusbarn.org.

Luis Miguel: A few resale tickets are available for pop superstar Luis Miguel's weekend concert, the first of two stops here on his current world tour — he'll be back in May. His most recent album is 2017's “Mexico por

Siempre,” a mariachi album recorded with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. 8 p.m. Saturday, Frost Bank Center, 1 Frost Bank Center Drive. Resale tickets starting at $94, tickemaster.com.
