3-mile stretch of Loop 1604 is closing this weekend

- By September Downing

The Loop 1604 expansion project will be giving North Side drivers another bout of traffic tie-ups this weekend as the Texas Department of Transportation closes down both westbound and eastbound lanes for about a 3-mile stretch.

The westbound main lanes will be closed to traffic from the Bitters Road exit ramp to the Lockhill Selma Road entrance ramp, about a 3-mile stretch, while the eastbound lane closure will extend from the Vance Jackson Road exit ramp to the Bitters entrance ramp, about 31⁄2 miles.

In addition, the exit ramp off westbound Interstate 10 leading to eastbound Loop 1604 will be closed, as well as the cloverleaf exit from eastbound I-10 leading to eastbound Loop 1604.

The closures will start at 9 p.m. today and last through 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting.

Drivers heading west on Loop 1604 will get off at the Bitters exit ramp and take the frontage road. They’ll get back on the highway using the Lockhill Selma entrance. Those traveling east will get off Loop 1604 using the Vance Jackson exit and use the frontage road. They’ll get back on using the Bitters entrance ramp.

Drivers heading west on I-10 and wanting to get to eastbound Loop 1604 will need to take the frontage road exit just north of UTSA Boulevard. They’ll continue on the I-10 frontage road to the frontage road for eastbound Loop 1604. They’ll be able to get on Loop 1604 using the Bitters entrance ramp.

Drivers who are heading east on I-10 and needing to get on eastbound Loop 1604 will get off at the frontage road exit just south of La Cantera Parkway and take the I-10 frontage road to the frontage road for eastbound Loop 1604. They’ll get on Loop 1604 using the Bitters entrance ramp.

Off-duty officers will be helping direct traffic through the intersections as needed, TXDOT said.

Once the road is reopened, TXDOT will be temporarily shifting the traffic from the existing main lanes to the newly paved lanes, which are inside of the old lanes. This will allow the construction crews to start working on those outside lanes. The temporary lane shift will extend from just west of Northwest Military Highway to Salado Creek. TXDOT didn’t indicate how long the new traffic configuration would be in place.

The closures are part of the third segment of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. The goal of the project is to improve a 23-mile stretch of Loop 1604 from Texas 16 to Interstate 35. TXDOT says that once the project is complete, the increased capacity should cut travel times by as much as 80 minutes. It expects to complete the third segment in 2025.
