City to open warming centers starting Sunday

San Antonio and Bexar County will open 11 overnight warming centers on Sunday as a biting cold front moves in.

Additional­ly, the city will keep 14 libraries and community centers open during the day Monday when other city facilities will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Monday’s low temperatur­es will be in the mid-20s, with a chance of freezing rain, according to Express-news meteorolog­ist Anthony Franze. Temperatur­es will further drop late Monday into early Tuesday, when they will fall to the upper teens.

The overnight warming centers will have basic supplies on hand. Residents will be able to charge their electronic devices and access free Wi-fi. The six city-run centers will have kennels for pets.

The centers open at 9 p.m. Sunday and will remain open through 8 a.m. Wednesday. The locations are:

Normoyle Senior Center, 700 Culberson Ave.

Northeast Senior Center, 4135 Thousand Oaks Drive

Southside Lions Senior Center, 3303 Pecan Valley Drive

Garza Community Center, 1450 Mira Vista

Copernicus Community Center, 5003 Lord Road

Miller’s Pond Community

Center, 6175 Old Pearsall Road Lighthouse Church Temple, 8201 Old Pearsall Road Outerwest Community Church, 12280 Alamo Ranch Parkway St. Padre Pio

Catholic Church, 3843 Bulverde Parkway Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1129 Pat Booker Road, Universal City Elmendorf Community Library, 203 Bexar Ave., Elmendorf

The 14 city sites that will be open Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. are:

Central Library, 600 Soledad St.

Schaefer Library, 6322 U.S. 87 East

Mission Library, 3134 Roosevelt Ave.

Cortez Library, 2803 Hunter Blvd.

Bazan Library, 2200 W. Commerce St.

Guerra Library, 7978 W. Military Drive

Maverick

Mystic Park

Igo Library, 13330 Kyle Seale Parkway

Encino Library, 2515 E. Evans Road

Thousand Oaks Library, 4618 Thousand Oaks

Tobin Community Center, 1900 W. Martin St.

Harlandale Community Center, 7227 Briar Place

Cuellar Community Center, 5626 San Fernando St.

Hamilton Community Center, 10700 Nacogdoche­s Road

VIA Metropolit­an Transit will provide free rides to passengers who alert the driver that they are going to one of these daytime warming centers.
