Dora Carter passed from this life on February 10, 2024, in Waco, Texas, at the age of 93. Born in the Texas Rangers Headquarte­rs in West Texas to Texas Ranger James Warren Smith and Normadale Smith, she lived in West Texas, Fort Worth, and later. Pearsall where her father was Sheriff of Frio County. After attending Baylor University, she married Luther Carter. The two lived in Northern Mexico while Luther worked for the AFTOSA cattle vaccinatio­n program for two years. Both learned fluent Spanish and developed a deep love for Mexico, its people, and culture. Returning to Pearsall, they began

ranching. After Luther’s death in 1985, Dora ably administer­ed the farming, ranching, and hunting operations.

A faithful member of First Baptist Church, Pearsall, a natural evangelist, and a believer in Christian education, Dora supported Tree of Life Learning Academy and other Christian causes. An avid interest in genealogy led her to membership in the San Antonio de Bexar Chapter of the NSDAR and the Caddell-smith Chapter of the DRT. Dora is preceded in death by her parents Warren and Norma Dale Smith and her brother, James Warren Smith. Dora is survived by children Carolyn Grace Carter Nicholson (David) and son William Luther Carter Jr.; grandchild­ren Emily Grace Nicholson Simcox (Rob) and John David Nicholson (Erin); great-grandchild­ren R.J. Simcox IV, Maxwell David Simcox, Sophia Grace Nicholson, and Lily Elena Nicholson. She is also survived by her nephews Roy Hinde (Pam) and Jim Hindes (Tricia) as well as Cousin Mary Jo Phillips.
