San Antonio expected to reach 80 degrees for first time this year

- By Anthony Franze

If you’re a warm-weather fan, you’ve probably been waiting for a week like this.

With high pressure developing across the West and spreading into the middle of the country, well-above average temperatures are coming to Texas this week.

It will be the warmest week so far in 2024. A few spots in Texas could even touch 90 degrees. It won’t be quite that hot in San Antonio, but highs are expected to reach the 80s, potentially a few times, in the Alamo City.

Here’s a look at the day-byday forecast.

Monday: It will be a chilly start as morning low temperatures fall to the mid to upper 30s on Presidents Day. After the chilly start, temps will rise fast in South Texas. San Antonio will reach 50 degrees by 10 a.m. and touch 60 degrees by noon. Afternoon highs will top out near 68 or 69 degrees, which is very close to the average high for mid-february.

Partly cloudy skies are expected early in the morning, but thanks to relative humidity values dropping below 50%, bright sunshine is anticipated by the afternoon. Enjoy the day before temperatures reach the 80s later in the week.

Tuesday: Temperatures will be about 10 degrees above average, likely topping out in the upper 70s in San Antonio. Winds will pick up slightly but only be 10 to 15 mph during the afternoon.

Wednesday and Thursday: In the upper atmosphere, a weak area of low pressure is expected to develop and move north of the high-pressure ridge. This will actually increase wind speeds and direct drier air from West Texas into San Antonio.

Dry air warms up quicker than humid air. So, this slight change in the weather pattern will result in the warmest temperatures of 2024 so far. Highs will reach the low 80s on Wednesday and rise even higher Thursday, topping out near 85 degrees in San Antonio.

A few spots in Texas will have a chance of reaching 90 degrees. This includes spots in West Texas, including Pecos and Big Bend National Park, as well as toward the Rio Grande Valley.

Friday: A weak cold front will move through South Texas by the end of the week. However, this front will only bring temperatures down about 10 degrees. Highs by Friday and

Saturday are still expected to reach the low to mid 70s, slightly above average for late February.

Due to the high-pressure system set to develop in the middle of the country, rain will be hard to come by across the Lone Star State. Here in South Texas, rain chances will be close to zero all week and into next weekend.

This will actually come as a nice change of pace for San Antonio, which has already received 7.59 inches of rain so far in 2024. That is more than four inches above average through Sunday and the seventh-rainiest start to a year on record.
