UTSA falls short in upset bid against South Florida
Within reach of a signature win against the first-place team in the American Athletic Conference, UTSA instead fell into a late offensive drought, allowing South Florida to come from behind for a 66-61 win on Wednesday in the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners (8-19, 2-12 AAC) held a five-point lead with four minutes to play but were held scoreless until a Carlton Linguard Jr. dunk with the game out of reach in the final seconds. The Bulls (20-5, 13-1) scored 11 straight points in that span, taking the lead with about 90 seconds remaining.
Down 60-59 with less than 30 seconds to play, UTSA used a baseline inbound play to create an open 3-pointer for Jordan Ivy-curry on the left wing.
But the shot was off the mark, allowing USF to seal the win at the free-throw line.
The Bulls extended their winning streak to 12 games, while the Roadrunners suffered a seventh straight loss.
UTSA finished with a season-high 19 turnovers, shooting a seasonworst 30.6% on 2-point shots and hitting just 28.1% from beyond the arc. USF shot 37.1% overall despite hitting just 4
of 23 (17.4%) from 3-point range, outscoring UTSA 36-16 in the paint.
Christian Tucker led the Roadrunners with team highs of 15 points
and six assists, while Linguard and Chandler Cuthrell each posted 10-point, 10-rebound double-doubles.
