Tobin Center, SAMA offer new discounts

- By Deborah Martin STAFF WRITER

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and the San Antonio Museum of Art have a couple of new discount programs designed to make their offerings more widely accessible.

“Art is an important part of the human experience and we want to make it available to everyone,” said Lauren Keck, director of marketing at the Tobin Center.

Here are the details:

Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

The downtown arts venue has launched a new Arts for All program as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations. It will make a limited number of $10 tickets available to SNAP and WIC beneficiaries who sign up for the program.

The deal is only available for the Tobin Center’s programming, which includes performances by its resident companies. Productions for which the space has been rented are not part of the program.

Arts for All passes are good for one year. They can then be renewed.

To enroll, visit the box office or go to tobincenter.org/artsfor all.

The Tobin Center has other discount programs, too, including Tobin Heroes, which is aimed at active-duty military and veterans, and their families; and Tobin Teachers, which is for educators. Information can be found at tobincenter.org.

San Antonio Museum of Art

Starting March 1, the museum will offer free admission to the entire museum to Bexar County residents from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and from 10 a.m. to noon Sundays. That will include the changing exhibits in the Cowden Gallery.

Currently, county residents who visit during those times have to pay a $5 surcharge if they want to see the Cowden shows, which are high-profile changing exhibitions. Right now, the space is home to “The Age of Armor: Treasures from the Higgins Armory Collection at the Worcester Art Museum,” a fantastic look at armor and weaponry, including several full suits of armor. It is on display through May 12.

In addition to dropping the surcharge, the museum will be enhancing programming on Tuesday evenings. That effort is being funded by an $800,000 grant the museum received from the Art Bridges Foundation as part of an initiative to expand access to museums.
