Suspect accused of murder in attempted NE Side robbery
Police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a 27-year-old man on the Northeast Side.
Kiavon Funta Eugene Dotson, 20, has been arrested and charged with capital murder. His bail was set at $500,000.
Dotson is accused of killing Cesar Estevan Garcia on Thursday in front of his workplace in the 6900 block of Northeast Loop 410.
Investigators say Dotson and a second man shot Garcia during a meetup with him, according to an arrest warrant affidavit supporting Dotson’s arrest.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Garcia dead in the stairwell. There were Glock switches, which are devices that convert semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons, in plastic baggies and shell casings near his body, police said.
Police released security camera footage from the shooting on Friday to help locate the two men.
In the video, Garcia attempts to walk away from two men when one of them grabs him from behind and puts a gun to his head.
Garcia is seen fighting back, and a second man, wearing a red hoodie and light-colored joggers, pulls out a gun and shoots Garcia. Police said the other man, dressed all in black, also starts shooting. Garcia then fell down the stairs after being shot several times.
Investigators said they found social media messages between Garcia and Dotson in Garcia’s cellphone. Dotson asked Garcia if he could “pull up” and Garcia provided him the address for his workplace, according to the affidavit.
Police used Dotson’s social media profile picture to identify him, and officers later showed up at his last known address, where they spoke with his mother, according to the affidavit.
Police showed his mother the security camera footage and she identified the man in all black as her son, according to the affidavit.
On Saturday, Dotson’s mother called police when her son arrived home and he was arrested.
Dotson confessed to the killing during an interview with police and said the intention was to rob Garcia for some gun parts, but the shooting occurred during the process, according to the affidavit.
