U.S. women edge Brazil for Cup title

-

Lindsey Horan scored on a header in first-half stoppage time and the United States went on to beat Brazil 1-0 on Sunday to win the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup Sunday night at San Diego.

The United States lifted the trophy despite being stunned by a loss to Mexico in the group stage of the tournament. It was the first women's Gold Cup, created to bring teams in the region more competition.

“It was a difficult game. Brazil challenged us in a different way,” Horan said. “I'm really, really proud of us finding a way to get a goal and finishing out the game and getting a trophy.”

Horan scored just moments into stoppage time with a header off a well-placed lofted pass from Emily Fox. It was Horan's third goal of the tournament, her earlier goals were from the penalty spot.

Bell, Toyota have winning weekend

Chevrolet dominated the start of the NASCAR Cup Series by claiming three straight wins, starting with William Byron's Daytona 500 victory.

As the series shifted to Phoenix Raceway, Toyota found the right gears and turn of the wrenches for a dominating weekend capped by Christopher Bell's trip to victory lane.

Toyota kicked off Friday with 17-year-old William Sawalich winning the rain-shortened ARCA Menards Series race. Chandler Smith continued Toyota's roll in Saturday's Xfinity race, taking advantage of Justin Allgaier's late crash to take the checkered flag.

Bell led the final 41 laps in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race.

Gauff rallies for Indian Wells win

Coco Gauff gave herself an early birthday present by beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 7-6 (5) on Monday in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, Calif.

Gauff, who turns 20 on Wednesday, struggled early but found a way to hold her serve by saving 10 of 11 break points.

She extended her winning streak in the United States to 18 matches, a run that includes winning the title at last year's U.S. Open.
