Majestic announces Broadway series lineup

- By Deborah Martin

“Moulin Rouge!” and “Shucked” both will be making their Alamo City debuts during the Broadway in San Antonio series at the Majestic Theatre next season.

The lineup also includes the San Antonio premiere of “MJ: The Musical,” as well as the return of fan favorites “Les Miserables” and “Mean Girls.”

Here's a look at how the 2024-25 season shakes out:

"MJ: The Musical": The jukebox musical spotlighting Michael Jackson's music revolves around his 1992 “Dangerous” world tour. The score includes “Billie Jean, “Beat It” and “Thriller.” Sept. 24-29.

“Shucked”: The punpacked musical is set in a place called Cob County, where the “hominy” of the residents is threatened

when the corn that has kept then separated from the rest of the world starts dying. The score by Brandy Clark and Shane Mcanally includes “Travelin' Song,” “Maybe Love” and, of course, “Corn.”

Nov. 26-Dec. 1.

“Peter Pan”: The musical adaptation of J.M Barrie's 1904 play follows the high-flying adventures of the eternal child with a trio of siblings and Tinker Bell. The score includes

“I Won't Grow Up,” “I'm Flying” and “Neverland.” Dec. 17-22.

“Les Miserables”: The musical warhorse is adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 novel following the impossibly strong fugitive Jean Valjean as he endeavors to raise a child on his own while staying ahead of the inspector doggedly pursuing him. The glorious score includes “I Dreamed a Dream," “On My Own” and “Empty Chairs and Empty Tables.” Jan. 29Feb. 2.

“Funny Girl”: The musical, which was revived on Broadway in 2022, was inspired by the career of Broadway and film star Fanny Brice. The score includes “People,” “I'm the Greatest Star” and “Don't Rain on My Parade.” Feb. 25-March 2.

“The Wiz”: The show puts an urban spin on “The Wizard of Oz” and includes an R&b-infused score. It will mark the 40th anniversary of its first Broadway run next year. The score includes such songs as “Believe in Yourself,” “Slide Some Oil to Me” and “Ease on Down the Road.” May 6-11, 2025.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical”:

The show adapted from the glitzy 2001 movie digs into the doomed romance between a bohemian poet and an ailing singer who also is desired by a wealthy duke. The score includes dozens of pop love songs, including “Bad Romance,” “Rolling in the Deep” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” May 27-June 8, 2025.

The season also includes the return of three shows that are not included in the season subscription, though they can be added. The musical adaptation of “Mean Girls” returns for a quick visit Nov. 8-10; “Hadestown” comes back Jan. 10-12; and the ABBA jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” grooves April 1-6, 2025.

Subscriptions start at $350. Single tickets go on sale later. For more information, call 210-226-5967 or visit broadwayinsan antonio.com.
