Sheriff: Mom, toddler found dead near West Side park

A 3-year-old boy and his mother were found dead Tuesday after an Amber Alert was issued earlier in the day.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said his office is still investigating, but they are working under the assumption that Savannah Kriger, 32, killed Kaiden Kriger, 3, and then herself. Their bodies were found in a drainage easement behind Tom Slick Park on the city’s West Side. There was a gun nearby.

Salazar said Kriger and Kaiden’s father were in a custody dispute, and court records show they were scheduled to attend a hearing the morning the Amber Alert was issued.

Kriger filed for divorce on March 7 and applied for a protective order against her husband on March 15. In the application, she alleged a history of sexual and physical violence dating back to 2020. She also stated she feared he would kill her and take their son.

She received a temporary restraining order on March 7 requiring Kaiden to be removed from his father’s custody. On Friday, Kriger filed a motion for a protective order.

However, a judge ordered Monday that Kaiden be delivered to the courtroom Tuesday morning.

According to the order, Kriger’s husband said his wife vandalized the home where he was living, pulled Kaiden out of school early and sent messages to her husband saying “goodbye to your son.” He also said she drained all the funds from their bank account.

He said Kriger expressed suicidal ideations twice in the last two weeks.

Kaiden and his mom were last seen around noon on Monday at Children’s Lighthouse Alamo Ranch when she picked him up from day care for a doctor’s appointment, according to a social media post from the Bexar County Sheriff ’s Office.

Kriger left work near the 3700 block of Fredericksburg Road and was seen leaving the day care around 2 p.m. driving a white 2023 Lincoln Aviator.

Family members became worried Monday when they called Kriger’s phone, which went to voicemail. Salazar said she also turned off the location tracker on her phone.

Deputies went to her home in the 8200 block of Dovers Den and were let in by a family member.

“They did find some things that led us to believe there was certainly cause for concern for the child, as well as for Savannah,” Salazar said, adding that he wouldn’t go into detail.

The car was later found abandoned at Tom Slick Park, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said. They searched the park overnight, but it wasn’t until the next morning that a park ranger found the two bodies.
