Kathy Schmidt died March 12, 2024 from the ravages of dementia. Her husband Charlie was beside her holding her hand. Kathy was the love of his life, his best friend, his soulmate, the wind under his wings. Kathy was a beautiful gift. Her parents were Alfred and Gladys Zeringue who predecease­d her. Kathy leaves three sisters, Carol Gauthreaux (Gilbert), Joanie Klein (R.C.), and Terri Lygate (Jack), and sisters-in-law Carol Sue Schmidt and Anne Mitchell (Wayne) as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Kathy was born and raised in Louisiana. She was a member of

the Congregati­on of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word from 1967 to 1982. Kathy received a bachelor’s degree in education from The University of the Incarnate Word and taught in several local Catholic elementary schools, including St. Cecelia’s where she was principal from 1978 – 1980.

She also taught at Sacred Heart Academy in San Angelo. Kathy received a master’s degree in college counseling at the University of Texas at Austin and thereafter served as a college counselor at St. Marcos High School, Incarnate Word High School, and St. Mary’s Hall.

Kathy was very active at her parish, St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she was a lector and coordinate­d the RCIA program. Kathy and Charlie were married at St. Joseph’s Chapel at the Village of the Incarnate Word in 1999.

Kathy donated her brain to the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegen­erative Diseases in San Antonio and her body to the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Chapel at The Village at Incarnate Word Retirement Community, 4707 Broadway, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 23.

A reception will follow at The Village. Those attending will be directed to reserved parking and to the chapel.
