2 more chances to get free tree
Did you miss your chance to get a free fruit tree during the city’s March giveaway?
Perhaps you were out of town or slept in too late. Or maybe you did show up to Monterrey Park ahead of the 8 a.m. start time, but the line to grab one of the 1,000 available plants was already cut off.
If your experience was less than fruitful, you’re in luck. The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is hosting two more giveaways this weekend.
The city is giving out 400 fruit trees on Saturday as part of the 10th annual Viva Poesia Festival at the Mission Marquee Plaza. The fig, lemon, lime and orange trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6 p.m. at the free event located at 3100 Roosevelt Ave.
Viva Poesia unites “local poets, visual artists and San Antonio UNESCO chef ambassadors to craft poetry, visual art and live cooking demonstrations along with tastings that will surprise and spark the imagination,” says the San Antonio Missions website.
There also will be live music by Los De Esta Noche and DJ Despeinada, family-friendly art activities, pop-up vendors and food available during the festival, which serves as the official kickoff event to National Poetry Month in the Alamo City.
The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department will host another tree giveaway on Sunday during the city’s celebration of Síclovía, the biannual block party that encourages locals and visitors to get out and play in the street. There will be 500 shade and ornamental trees available beginning at 10 a.m. at Madison Square Park. Cedar elm, live oak, Mexican plum, crape myrtle and bur oak trees will be available in 1-gallon buckets.
Organized by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, the free event temporarily closes certain streets to cars and opens them up to residents for recreational and sports activities like biking, running or skateboarding. More than 18,000 people attended Síclovía last spring, the YMCA’S website says.
Not available this weekend? Don’t fret. A final giveaway of ornamental and shade trees will take place on Earth Day, April 20, at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Lake Park.
