Chiefs bring in veteran Wentz

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to one-year deals with quarterbac­k Carson Wentz and running back Clyde Edwards-helaire, two people familiar with the negotiatio­ns told the Associated Press on Tuesday, giving them a backup for Patrick Mahomes and some depth in their backfield.

Wentz, the No. 2 overall pick in 2016, joins his fifth team in five yearss. He spent last season with the Rams and led Los Angeles to a victory in the final game in his only start.

Blaine Gabbert backed up Mahomes in 2023 when the Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl.

Wentz was 47-45-1 as a starter in eight seasons with Philadelph­ia, Indianapol­is, Washington and the Rams.

Edwards-helaire has appeared in 48 games, running for 1,845 yards and 12 touchdowns, while dealing with injuries the last four seasons.

Oklahoma State turns to Lutz

Steve Lutz was hired as the coach at Oklahoma State after one season at Western Kentucky.

The 51-year-old Lutz has a 69-35 career record and has led his teams to the NCAA Tournament in each of his three seasons as a head coach — this year at Western Kentucky and the previous two at Texas A&m-corpus Christi. Before that, he was an assistant at Purdue and Creighton.

Lutz takes over for Mike Boynton, who was fired after going 119-109 in seven seasons.

Western Kentucky promoted assistant Hank Plona on Tuesday to replace Lutz.

Charleston hires Mack:

College of Charleston has hired former Louisville coach Chris Mack as its coach after its last coach, Pat Kelsey, left to take the Cardinals job last week.

Mack made the NCAA Tournament nine times in 12 full seasons as coach at Xavier and Louisville. Mack's time with the Cardinals ended in January 2022 when he was dismissed.

Drake hires Division II whiz:

Drake hired Ben Mccollum as its coach, entrusting the longtime and ultra-successful coach from Division II Northwest Missouri State with continuing the momentum the Bulldogs had under Darian Devries.

Devries was hired by West Virginia last week.

Mccollum, 42, led Northwest Missouri State to four national titles in 15 seasons.
