Ex-rutgers AD Pernetti hired as AAC commission­er

The American Athletic Conference on Wednesday hired former Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti as its next commission­er to replace the retiring Mike Aresco.

Pernetti, 53, will take over in June.

A New Jersey native and former Rutgers football player, Pernetti currently is the president of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Pernetti was athletic director at Rutgers from 2009-13, helping land the school membership in the Big Ten after years in the Big East and one year in the American Athletic Conference.

The AAC has been in transition the last two years with UCF, Houston and Cincinnati leaving for the Big 12 and six new schools joining in 2023: North Texas, Rice, FAU, Charlotte, UAB and UTSA.

Reese leaving LSU for WNBA draft

LSU star Angel Reese formally declared for the WNBA draft less than two days after the Tigers’ season ended with a loss to Caitlin Clark and Iowa in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament.

Sports and AEG will launch a new postseason college basketball tournament next year.

The College Basketball Crown will be a 16-team tournament that will take place March 31 through April 6, 2025, in Las Vegas. Teams that did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament will be eligible.

NFL: Chicago Bears and Texas great Steve Mcmichael, who’s battling ALS, was hospitaliz­ed again and undergoing tests Wednesday,.

The 66-year-old Mcmichael went public with an ALS diagnosis three years ago. He spent more than a week at a suburban hospital after being admitted into ICU on Feb. 15 with a urinary tract infection. He was hospitaliz­ed one week after being voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice met with Dallas police Wednesday and said he was taking “full responsibi­lity” for his part in a weekend wreck involving speeding sports cars that caused a chainreact­ion crash on a Dallas highway and resulted in minor injuries to four people.
