Missions complete a sweep at Amarillo

Marcos Castañon and Connor Hollis hit home runs and Zach Reks drove in three runs and the San Antonio Missions capped a seasonopen­ing sweep at Amarillo with a 9-4 victory over the Sod Poodles on Sunday.

The Missions (3-0) outscored the Sod Poodles 39-14 in the series, following 12-5 and 18-5 decisions in the first two games. San Antonio had seven home runs in the series.

Missions righthande­r Raul Brito (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and a strikeout, to pick up the win in relief.

In Saturday night's rout, Ray-patrick Didder had two home runs, including a grand slam, and Reks also contribute­d a grand slam for the Missions. Nathan Martorella went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double while driving in three runs.

Castaneda takes bout by decision

Kendo Castaneda (21-6, 9 KOS) of San Antonio defeated Cameron Krael (20-33-3, & KOS) of Honolulu by unanimous decision in an eight-round bout Saturday night for the IBA America welterweig­ht title at Davies Boxing and Fitness.

Castaneda won by scores of 78-74, 78-74 and 77-75.

Also, San Antonio light heavyweigh­t Brown Nevarez (11-4-1, 4 KOS) won by TKO over Giovanni Loya (4-4-1, 2 KOS) of El Paso at 2:43 of the second round in the co-main event.

Patriots’ Dugger gets $66M deal

The Patriots are resigning safety Kyle Dugger to a four-year contract, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press.

The new deal is worth a base salary of $58 million, which includes $32.5 million in guarantees, and has a maximum value of $66 million.

Dugger started all 17 games last season and led the Patriots with 71 solo tackles and two intercepti­ons. The 28-year-old has totaled nine intercepti­ons and 343 combined tackles over the past four seasons since being drafted in the second round out of Lenoir-rhyne in 2020.

NASCAR Almirola wins at Martinsvil­le

Aric Almirola grabbed the lead by going threewide on the outside in a two-lap dash to the finish and won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsvil­le (Va.) Speedway on Saturday night.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Tennessee names Caldwell coach

Tennessee athletic director Danny White has moved quickly and gone outside the historic Lady Vols' program in hiring Marshall coach Kim Caldwell as only its fourth head coach in the NCAA era.

White announced the hiring Sunday, within a couple of hours of the women's national championsh­ip game. It's a game the Lady Vols have not played in since 2008 when they won their eighth and last national title under Pat Summitt.

Caldwell won the 2024 Maggie Dixon NCAA

Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award for her work at Marshall, going 26-7 to earn the program's second NCAA Tournament berth ever and first since 1997. She is 217-31 in eight seasons.

Collins claims Charleston title

Danielle Collins won her second straight WTA title, following her Miami Open victory with the Charleston Open championsh­ip on Sunday.

Collins defeated 2017 Charleston champion Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1 for her 13th straight match victory. She is the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win Miami and Charleston in consecutiv­e weeks.
