This week turns up heat — is relief on way?

- By Anthony Franze

During mid-april, the historical average high temperatures in San Antonio are generally in the low 80s, between 80 to 82 degrees. This week, South Texas will be well above that, reaching high temps more typical in late May than mid-april.

Thankfully, long-range models do show a potential cold front moving into the region by the end of the work week and next weekend, but there are still some question marks about when and how strong the front will be. Here’s a day-by-day outlook at what you can expect.

Day-by-day outlook

Monday: A relatively mild start to the morning is expected as low temperatures only drop into the mid-60s. Nearly overcast skies are expected, and mostly cloudy skies will stick around throughout the day.

Even with the cloudy skies, temperatures will warm up quite a bit. San Antonio will reach 80 degrees by around 1 p.m., topping out in the mid- to upper 80s by the late afternoon. Wind speeds will also be gusty, reaching 20 to 25 mph by Monday evening.

Tuesday: Early morning temperatures on Tuesday will be even warmer, possibly staying in the low 70s in San Antonio. There’s a small chance of a shower in the morning, but most spots will stay dry.

Slightly drier air will move into the region during the afternoon, leading to partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the upper 80s, possibly approaching 90 degrees. If San Antonio does reach 90 degrees, it would be the third time in 2024.

Wednesday and Thursday:

Almost a “copy and paste” forecast is expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Morning low temperatures will be mild, in the upper 60s to low 70s. Afternoon high temperatures will rise close to 90 degrees in San Antonio. Even with partly to mostly cloudy skies, rain chances will stay low.

Next cold front

The latest weather model data is showing that the late-week cold front may come through slightly later than expected. Also, it likely will not be as strong as previously expected, either.

The front is expected to stall near San Antonio by Friday afternoon. Friday’s temperatures will depend on exactly where the front stalls. If it stays to the north, temperatures could rise to the mid-80s on Friday. If the front moves farther south, highs will be cooler, likely in the 70s.

With the front in the area, scattered showers and storms will also be possible. Rain chances in San Antonio are about 30%. This time of the year, severe weather is always a possibility as well, but a severe weather outbreak is not expected.

The front will likely move all the way through San Antonio over the weekend. That will cause temperatures to fall a bit more. High temperatures in the 70s appear likely for Saturday and Sunday. While this cold front is not expected to make things feel chilly, it will provide relief from the heat and a few chances of rain.
