GRADUATION SUITS TITANS REAL WELL

- BY GLAE THIEN Thien is a freelance writer.

Inscribed on the Poway swimsuits is a principle that guided Titans senior captain Grace Kellerman and her water polo teammates this season: “One team, one dream.”

Kellerman scored five goals to fulfill the dream in the San Diego Section Division I final as top-seeded Poway beat Westview 16-11 on Saturday for its second straight title at La Jolla High.

With a step up from D-II this season, the Titans (21-8) dispatched the defending D-I champion by pulling away with five of the last six goals.

“After we moved up, we just looked to better ourselves, come together and have a great time,” said Kellerman,

a four-year varsity member. “It’s a sport we love, and we came to win.”

Campbell Hakim and Emilia Peterson each added three goals for Poway with eight returning players from last season along with two freshman standouts.

“I’m just really thrilled,” said Hakim, who converted two second-half penalty shots. “The whole season has been like a journey with all the hard work that paid off.”

Julia Derunes recorded all four of her goals in the second half for No. 7 Westview (13-15), which again defied the seedings after prevailing as the ninth seed last year.
