As a team captain, Mar Vista senior Melanie Clamp repeatedly spoke up during timeout huddles. Ultimately, she had the final say with the deciding shot in the San Diego Section Division II girls water polo final.

Clamp converted a longdistance attempt with 12 seconds left to lift the top-seeded Mariners past La Costa Canyon 10-9 at La Jolla High on Saturday.

“It’s awesome,” said Clamp, who finished with two goals. “I couldn’t have done anything without my teammates. They got the ball moving quickly, and they knew I could do it.”

Junior goalie Abbey Harbin closed out the game with her 14th save in the first final for Mar Vista (26-6)

since winning the 2016 crown.

“It was very nerve-racking,” said Harbin, who returned to the Mariners this season after a year away. “We played hard and won.”

Summer Chalmers had three goals to lead Mar Vista, which prevailed after the No. 6 Mavericks rebounded from a three-goal deficit to pull even 9-9 for the first time on a penalty shot by Mia Macdonald for her second goal with 59 seconds left.

Camyrn Delaney recorded six goals to spearhead LCC (15-15).

Mar Vista improved after bowing in the quarterfinals a year ago.
