Upon the final buzzer of the San Diego Section Open Division girls water polo final, Bishop’s senior Sierra Martin turned to two nearby teammates for a hug in celebration of the Knights’ repeat title.

With four goals from Martin in her inside position, second-seeded Bishop’s surged past Carlsbad 10-5 in a finals rematch for the school’s ninth crown in 10 years at La Jolla High on Saturday night.

“Last year, our coaches (Doug Peabody and Ian Davidson) asked us what we want our legacy to be,” said Martin, a third-year starter. “This is a pretty good one.”

Bishop’s (23-3) opened a three-goal lead before Hannah Desoto scored for the No. 1 Lancers with 4:01 before halftime. With a last-second

goal by Sophia Sanders, the Knights took a 5-1 halftime edge.

“Before the game, our coaches told us exactly how we were going to play,” said Martin, who helped the Knights avenge a 7-6 loss in the teams’ only regular-season meeting. “We were very excited (beforehand).”

Bishop’s goalie Sofia Stein made 10 saves to help turn back the Lancers (20-8), who had three mainstays from their title team two years ago.

Sanders and Alex Bonaguidi each added two goals for the Knights, while Carlsbad’s Brooke Ochoa also scored twice.
