PATRIOTS ADVANCE WITH AN EASY WIN

- BY JOHN MAFFEI

Superior rebounding and pressure defense that produced 26 turnovers helped No. 7-seeded Christian stun No. 2 Westview 7651 Saturday in a Open Division quarterfinal game.

The Patriots (19-10) advance to play at Cathedral Catholic.

Westview (26-3), which lost for the first time at home this season after 10 wins, will advance to the Southern California Regionals in a division where all eight San Diego Section teams move on.

The Patriots scored the first six points of the second quarter. Westview cut the deficit to three before Christian went on a 15-5 run to take a 13-point lead.

Christian outrebounded the Wolverines 35-24. The Patriots also blocked eight shots.

Christian, which has won 21 and 22 in its two seasons under coach Vickie Carrington, pushed the advantage

to 20 late in the third quarter and 31 midway through the fourth quarter.

Christian’s Allie Carreon led all scorers with 26 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Simone James added 12 points.

“We had a whole week to prepare and we executed really well,” Carreon said. “We were a little nervous coming into the game because they were a two seed and we were a seven.

“The way we practiced carried over, and we executed very well.”

Sarah Moyer had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for the Patriots. Serene Weckback scored just two, but grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.

Sarina Dacio, who was honored before the game for scoring 1,000 career points, led Westview with 15.
