DONS SOPHOMORE PLACES WIN ON ICE

- BY STEVE BRAND

Isuneh “Ice” Brady entered the Open Division quarterfinals against visiting Bishop’s on Saturday night averaging 19.6 points.

She scored 23 — in the first half.

Dominating inside, Brady had nine field goals before intermission, one a 3pointer, as No. 3-seeded Cathedral Catholic won its eighth straight with a 77-52 victory, advancing to Wednesday’s San Diego Section semifinals against Christian.

Brady finished with career-highs of 41 points and 27 rebounds. The 41 points pushed the 6-4 sophomore over 1,000 points in just two years.

“I didn’t know I’d scored 41 points. Credit my teammates for getting me the ball,” said Brady.

“I had 27 rebounds — woo hoo. That’s amazing. The only thing better would be if I also had double figures for assists.

“I did feel the need to contribute more with Mazzi (Harris) out. My coaches are pushing me every day in practice to get better. We’re super excited to be playing so well — we can’t wait for the next game. We could go all the way.”

The defending Open Division champions jumped to a 10-0 lead, went on a 19-2 run early in the second quarter then added a 9-0 start to the second half and were simply too much for the No. 6 Knights (17-10) even without Harris, who is expected to return for the next game after turning her ankle.

The Dons (18-10) also received 13 points from Taryn Johnson and 12 from Izzy Navarro.

Bishop’s got 22 points from sophomore Renee Chong and 17 from freshman Aaliyah Stanton.
