American Masters presents “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool”
9 p.m. Tuesday. KPBS TV
Has any other American musician rivaled the impact of Miles Davis? A singular trumpeter, band leader and artistic innovator, Davis’ influence extends across jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, electronica, house and more. “Discussing Miles makes you feel like a dime-store novelist talking about Shakespeare,” Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood said in a 2001 Union-tribune interview. “We’ve taken and stolen from him shamelessly, not just musically, but in terms of his attitude of moving things forward.” The documentary “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” which has its television premiere Tuesday on KPBS, focuses on his remarkable legacy. Narrated by Carl Lumby, who deftly emulates Davis’ trademark rasp, the film includes insights from such Davis collaborators as Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Carlos Santana and former San Diegan Quincy Troupe, as well as Davis’ first wife and early muse, Frances Taylor.
