Elizabeth Warren has a plan for America

- BY LORENA GONZALEZ

There’s too much at stake right now for San Diego County’s families to just hope that change is on the way in this next election. We need a plan. Climate change is looming as an existential threat to our children, yet combating it takes a backseat to the profits of polluting corporations. The costs of health care, housing and a college education for our kids have squeezed working families. Our earning power at work has barely budged and not kept pace with the costs of living the American Dream.

These are the problems I think about and fight to solve every day, and so does Elizabeth Warren.

It’s no mystery to me why. We both grew up living paycheck to paycheck in bluecollar families. And we have both vowed to make big, structural change to the broken systems that have caused millions of families to struggle.

I am supporting Elizabeth Warren for president because she knows these problems all stem from two things: The corrupting influence of money in our political system and the imbalance of power between workers and corporations.

If you want to know why Washington does nothing real about climate change, it’s because of the outsized influence polluters have in the political arena. If you want to know why a San Diego family pays more for an Amazon Prime subscription than Amazon paid in federal income taxes for years, it’s because corporations pay lobbyists to try to keep it that way. And if you want to know why Congress “worries” about the solvency of Social Security, it’s because Uber and Instacart refuse to pay their fair share of Social Security contributions for the hundreds of thousands of people they employ.

I’m supporting Elizabeth because she’s the candidate with the best plan to attack corruption and put power in the hands of regular folks and workers. Elizabeth has made anti-corruption the guiding pillar of her campaign and proposed the most sweeping set of anti-corruption reforms since Watergate. She has the most detailed plan to hold corporations accountable and give working families a voice at every table.

It’s only when we break the influence of power and money from Washington that we can deliver the things San Diegans deserve from their government.

Only then will we have a government that truly works for the people.

Gonzalez represents California’s 80th Assembly District.
