San Diego stamp and coin expert still buying collections — but not for much longer
Local coin and stamp expert Alan J. Weiss, who turned 75 on March 5, is still buying large coin and stamp collections, accumulations and estates — but not for much longer — according to his wife, Donna. “After 32 years in the business, Alan, you’re done,” she said. “We need more time for family, friends and travel.”
In earlier years, Weiss worked as a vice president and retirement specialist in the financial sector.
Weiss suggests that anyone who has been sitting on the fence about selling should consider calling now for an appointment to get together to discuss his or her holdings. Whether it’s several cartons, bookshelves or a roomful, no amount of coins or stamps is too much for him to buy. But appointments are filling up fast and Weiss will come to you or wherever the material is located.
“Sometimes it’s hard to part with collections because of sentimental value, especially if they’ve been inherited,” Weiss said. “But if you leave the material behind for your own family, you have to wonder if you are dividing it up fairly; by selling to us now, you receive money instead, which by its very nature is easy to split among beneficiaries.
“Unknown factors like the economy, politics and foreign affairs can change the values of collectibles over time,” Weiss said, “so if you want to lock in today’s market prices, this might be the time to sell, rather than waiting on the unknown.”
Weiss, a U.S. Air Force veteran, may be reached any day by calling (858) 692-5057; no texts please. He also wishes to thank all of the many individuals, couples and families in the San Diego area who have worked with him over the years.
