San Diego Union-Tribune (Sunday)
Adjusting to life with a pandemic
Like everyone today, Union-tribune reporters and editors are adapting to life under the coronavirus. The paper remains open. News media have been deemed an essential service.
But staff members are working remotely at home via the Internet. For the most part, this is no different than working at the U-T'S office in downtown San Diego or its San Marcos office. The U-T provided reporters and editors with laptops that are loaded with the same programs and apps as their work stations in the office.
Much of the communication among reporters and editors pre-corona was done with instant messaging or emails anyway, even when the person was just on the other side of the office.
However, face-to-face interaction is much faster when working on deadline.
Some content now free
Print and e-edition subscribers have unlimited access to all content on the U-T'S website. Nonsubscribers quickly hit a “paywall”
that limits free content. In times of crisis, such as during widespread wildfires or in these days of the coronavirus, the U-T will drop the paywall as a public service.
Vital coronavirus information now is available for free on sandiegouniontribune.com.
Activate e-edition
Home delivery is continuing (mine has not missed a day), but in case a missed delivery occurs, print subscribers should know they have full access to the e-edition, which is an exact replica of print. If print subscribers have not activated their access to the e-edition, they can go to sandiegouniontribune.com/activate, and:
1. Click on “Activate digital access.”
2. Enter your last name, ZIP code and house number. Then click submit.
3. Enter your email address. Then click continue.
4. Create a password. Then click submit.
