Generators will keep lights, appliances running during outage

-

With wildfires, heat waves and rolling power blackouts plaguing California, home backup generators are becoming increasingly popular. A generator can keep the air conditioning running, the lights on, phones charged and food from spoiling until the power comes back on.

There are several ways to utilize a generator to keep the power on in your home, said Jamie Hunley, owner of Point Loma Electric and Plumbing.

A fully automated standby backup generator can detect when the power goes out and automatically switch itself on and power some or all of your home. Automatic backup generators are powered by propane or natural gas and can operate without intervention. The downside is that they cost more than portable generators, and due to noise restrictions, they are not an option in all areas of San Diego. There are currently long wait times for delivery, so you will want to plan ahead.

Portable generators are a practical and cost-effective way to power essential needs.

They come in a variety of sizes and price points and can power a few items. Small appliances such as TVS and lights can be plugged directly into the generator. To power built-in appliances such as the air conditioner, you will need a manual transfer switch installed by an electrician. The downside is that portable generators will need to be moved to the desired location to plug in appliances and they need to be supplied with gasoline. Portable generators are readily available, allowing you to be ready for a power outage quickly.
