AUDIBLE’S WORDS + MUSIC SERIES DIVES DEEP

With much of the arts moving to online and streaming platforms, here’s a look at a weekly standout.

My pick: Audible’s Words + Music series Why: Because I’m in the car so much, I pay a monthly fee for Audible, Amazon’s audiobook platform. I’ve listened to so many great novels this way, most recently Kevin Wilson’s “Nothing to See Here” and Celeste Ng’s “Little Fires Everywhere.” Part of that membership includes Audible Originals, which gets you unlimited access to works by new writers, story plays and innovative fiction (my favorite is “Evil Eye” by Madhuri Shekar ). Recently, Audible added a Words + Music series that features musicians telling stories behind some of their favorite or best-known songs. The range of artists spans from Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow to James Taylor and Common.

It also includes one of my all-time favorite artists, St. Vincent. St. Vincent is the solo project of musician Annie Clark, and her recording, which is about 90 minutes, combines stories with original renditions of the songs she discusses. It’s surprisingly intimate and honest. I thought I knew a lot about St. Vincent, but I learned so many new things, like why Clark picked the name St. Vincent. Juxtaposing these stories with original performances of songs I’m already so familiar with puts her music in a completely new lens for me to appreciate. Most of the other recordings follow a similar pattern — each is broken down into chapters, or songs, so you can listen to the entire 90-minute story, or you can skip to songs you want to hear and know more about. The performances are mostly acoustic, or very stripped down, and overall, the Words + Music series is a perfect way to spend a cozy autumn night.

Find it: Words + Music is free with an Audible membership; individual episodes range from $6.95 to $14.95 for nonmembers.
