WHY RUTH WILSON IS MY NEW FAVORITE ACTRESS

- MICHAEL JAMES ROCHA • U-T

With much of the arts moving to online and streaming platforms, here’s a look at an off-the-radar highlight:

My pick: Actress Ruth Wilson

Why: If you’re like me these days, you bounce around streaming platforms looking for the next binge-worthy show. In the middle of the night recently, during a bad case of insomnia, I stumbled upon “Mrs. Wilson,” a historical drama miniseries that first aired on BBC in 2018. The best part of it? Awardwinning actress Wilson, who stars as her grandmother Alice Wilson in a story that chronicles the multiple — and secretive — lives of novelist and former MI6 officer Alexander Wilson, her grandfather. Unfortunately, the show, which Wilson executive produced, ended its run on Amazon Prime Video on Oct. 31, but it’s still available to rent or buy.

Tell me more: I’ll be honest: I wasn’t that familiar with Wilson’s work. So it was truly a gold mine to discover her and her phenomenal acting in “Mrs. Wilson” — a role made even more dramatic by the fact that she was portraying her grandmother. In one particular dramatic church scene, her acting was so amazing, I whispered: “She should win an award for that.” She was, as it turns out, nominated for a British Academy Television Award, as was the miniseries itself. The show and Wilson didn’t win, but she has won several awards, including an Olivier for “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Anna Christie,” both in 2012. Two years later, she won a Golden Globe for her role as Alison Lockhart in the Showtime drama “The Affair.”

Where you can see her: If you want to check out more of Wilson, many of her shows are streaming on Amazon Prime Video, including the psychological drama “Dark River,” the BBC crime drama “Luther,” Showtime’s “The Affair” (Season 1) and BBC’S “Jane Eyre.” She also can be seen in the BBC/HBO fantasy drama series “His Dark Materials,” which returns Nov. 16.
