A man was shot and killed Friday night near an abandoned taco shop in a La Mesa shopping center parking lot, police said.

Several 911 callers reported hearing gunshots around 9:35 p.m. in the strip mall off Lake Murray Boulevard just west of Aztec Drive, La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch said.

One caller reported seeing a person lying in the parking lot.

One witness heard about six to nine shots; another heard at least six.

When officers arrived, they found the 29-year-old victim suffering from several gunshot wounds and began rendering medical aid, according to Lynch and Lt. Greg Runge. Medics later took over, but the man died at the scene. His name was not released.

Officers found the victim on the ground next to an older model, four-door Honda sedan.

Witnesses reported seeing a dark sedan, possibly a two-door car, speeding away from the scene. It was not immediately known if that vehicle was involved in the shooting.
