“All That You Can’t Leave Behind” Super Deluxe Edition

-

Released in late 2000, “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” marked U2’s return to soaring guitar-rock anthems and a sharp turn away from the edgy, techno- and electronica-tinged experimental approach of the Irish band’s three previous albums — 1991’s “Achtung Baby,” 1993’s “Zooropa” and 1997’s “Pop.” Immediacy was the goal, not the arch irony of its 1990s releases. Or, as U2 singer Bono described “Behind” at the time: “In our heads we’ve written 11 singles for this record. This record is ‘verse-chorus-and-here’sanother-chorus-just-in-case-you-missed-the-last-one.’ ”

This suitably massive 20th anniversary set combines the album’s original 11 songs, including such standouts as “Beautiful

Day” and “Walk On,” with 39 additional tracks. They include remixes, B-sides, three outtakes — “Levitate,” “Flower Child” and “Love You Like Mad” — and a vibrant, 19-song-strong 2001 “Elevation Live” tour concert recorded in Boston. There’s also a double-sided poster and a 32-page book of previously unseen U2 photos by famed music photographer Anton Corbijn. The absence of any video component is a minus (surely, a show on U2’s 2001 tour was filmed). But “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” has aged quite well, and this expanded version does the album and the band justice.

Interscope; five CDS, plus a 32-page book and a poster; $109.61
